In the Summer of 2011, Erin Klitz began a pilot program where students became artisans and began making and selling handcrafting pottery, and later horticulture and baking. By the end of the summer program, participants had planted over 1,700 sunflowers, handmade beautiful pottery, and tested dozens of recipes for granola, a future baking enterprise. These amazingly gifted individuals found that they could be successful farmers, potters, and bakers, capable of growing and making wonderful products to sell to the public.

Significant growth has occurred since BiG’s original inception including, but not limited to, the following:

  • Increased the vocational program from three to four days per week
  • Began collaboration with Community Montessori School to continue expanding the sunflower enterprise (today over 7,000 sunflowers have been planted)
  • Hosted the first BiG Plant Sale at Century 21
  • Participated in community service projects with Southwestern University students
  • Doubled the number of citizens from 8 to 17

“Jordan & Skala donated MEP design services and skills that will help change the future of our children with special needs. The need is so great and only growing. Thanks again for everything.” – Erin Klitz, Director of Brookwood in Georgetown.
