The GSA selected Jordan and Skala Engineers to be the MEP engineers for the new Social Security Administration office complex in Birmingham, Alabama.  The new 590,000-SF office building, which at the time of construction, had the largest underfloor HVAC distribution system in the world. The facility serves as the Social Security Administration’s regional payment and training center and houses 2,200 people.

Amenities include a fitness center, full-service cafeteria, child care center, credit union and auditorium. The LEED Silver certified building includes a large green roof, a water collection system for recycling rainwater for landscaping irrigation, a natural light harvesting system and a raised floor system that improves air quality through better ventilation.

This award winning project has received the following awards:

  • Best of the Best Award, Government – Engineering News-Record
  • Best of the Best Design Award, Best of Government – IIDA Georgia
  • Design Excellence Award, Singular Space – ASID Georgia.
